What is stBTC?

stBTC is a staked, synthetic representation of Bitcoin on Botanix, the Bitcoin-based blockchain that unlocks Bitcoin Finance. By depositing Bitcoin into a permissionless smart contract, you receive stBTC, a liquid token that represents your share of the staking vault.

As Botanix processes transactions, 50% of the network’s gas fees, paid in Bitcoin, flow to stBTC holders. Over time, the Bitcoin value of your stBTC grows, so when you redeem it, you withdraw your initial BTC deposit plus yield.

stBTC is not printed or farmed. It is backed by real economic activity, turning Bitcoin into a productive, composable asset that anchors a new era of Bitcoin-native finance.

How Does It Work?

The process is simple and transparent:

• Deposit Bitcoin into Botanix’s audited, permissionless contract.

• Receive liquid stBTC tokens that stay in your wallet.

• As transactions happen, 50% of the Bitcoin gas fees accrue to stBTC holders, increasing the value of each token.

• Redeem stBTC at any time to withdraw your Bitcoin plus the accumulated yield.

Your stBTC balance doesn’t change, but its value rises continuously as network activity grows. That means your Bitcoin earns more Bitcoin, compounding in real time.

Where Does the Yield Come From?

Botanix uses Bitcoin as its native gas token. Every transaction on the network generates fees in BTC. Half of those fees are redistributed to stakers through stBTC.

This makes stBTC the first-ever system where gas fees flow back to the people, not to insiders, but directly to users. As Botanix adoption grows, so does transaction volume, creating a sustainable flywheel of real yield.

Early activity is projected to generate yields of 20–50% annually, before stabilizing around 6–8% long term — comparable to Ethereum staking returns, but denominated entirely in Bitcoin.

The Launch

stBTC yield accrual begins on September 18, ahead of the Genesis Vault launch on September 25 at 10:00am ET. The vault will be capped at 50 BTC. Once the cap is reached, deposits will pause, so early participants should follow Botanix updates on X and join the Discord to secure a spot. There is no bonding period, you can stake at any time.

Security is paramount. stBTC is built on the battle-tested EIP-4626 vault standard, the same design that underpins leading staking protocols. Contracts have been audited by Spearbit and Sigma Prime (see docs.botanixlabs.com).

The Botanix network itself is secured by the Spiderchain — a decentralized Proof-of-Stake architecture run by a federation of 16 independent node operators including Alchemy, Galaxy, and Fireblocks.
